One of the interesting discoveries many businesses have had due to the stay at home orders is that their staff can be just as productive at home. Many are now giving their staff the choice of working from home or working in the office. If you’ve decided that you don’t need all your current space and have decided to downsize, you probably have some cleaning out to do which may mean you need a dumpster rental. It also means you need a plan to get rid of what you no longer need. Here are some steps to take.
Steps to a Successful Transition
The first step you’ll need to take is surveying your staff. Find out who still wants or needs to work from the office full time, who wants to work part time in the office and part time at home and who no longer wants to come in. Once you have an idea of your space needs, communicate to your team. You can then set about a plan for desk or office sharing or permanently assigned spaces.
Then call a shredding company and ask for delivery of a shredding bin and a dumpster rental company for a dumpster delivery. Once you have those scheduled, let your staff each pick a day to come in and get to work cleaning their workspace and eliminating files that should be shredded and items that should be discarded.
As you get to the point of evaluating desks and other furnishings, decide if you’re going to sell it, donate it or throw it away. As much as many donation centers rely on the proceeds of your generosity, it costs them to dispose of broken or unusable items too. Save the charity money and throw broken items or those on their last legs in your dumpster.
Communicate with Your Landlord
No matter where you are in your lease, you should communicate your plans with our landlord. They may have someone who wants your excess space or they may have a space that you can move to coming available. Planning makes the changes easier on everyone. One of your neighboring tenants may want to expand which would save them from moving and you from paying on the current space.
